After contemplating Pilate’s question to Jesus Christ: “What is truth?” John Jaques wrote the text for this hymn, which was included in the first edition of the Pearl of Great Price as a poem and later set to music by Ellen Knowles Melling, whom Jaques had baptized while preaching in Scotland.
